What is Multipotentiality?
“The state of having many exceptionally strong abilities or talents. The child who has the Midas touch and is good at everything he does from math to science to English to music to sports to art to leadership has multi-potentiality.” - Hoagiesgifted.org “The state of having many exceptional talents, any one or more of which could make for a great career for that person.” - Education Week Watch This 12 Minute Video! – Discusses removing the ceiling for potential & allowing ourselves to embrace our multipotentiality. It does a great job explaining from the perspective of someone with multipotentiality. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJORi5VO1F8&feature=youtu.be What can we do to support kids who are "good at everything"? 1.Balance extracurricular activities. It’s important not to weigh kids too heavily towards one area. It’s also important to leave enough unstructured time for kids to pursue their own interests. 2.What do people REALLY do every day? Career days in school are interesting, but they are usually conducted like speed dating and kids don’t have the chance to ask many questions. Find ways to ask family, friends, and random people questions about their jobs when there is a chance. 3.Remember that interests change over time. Some kids may change their mind in career choices as their interests change. Be open to supporting their changes. 4.Remind them that being good at many things is a gift and not a curse. The world needs people who can bring multiple talents to complex problems we are facing. Retrieved from: http://www.planetsmarty.com/2017/03/is-there-true-calling.html |
